Ancient Vedic texts and teachings have provided spiritually conscious individuals a manual for living for thousands of years.  One of the most important instructions these teachings include is called purushartha, or the four universal goals of human life, which contribute to living with balance, integrity, and joy. These four universal goals of human life include: dharma (realizing our higher purpose and fulfilling our destiny), artha (true prosperity), kama (pleasure or enjoyment for the sake of the soul), and moksha (the absolute freedom that comes with enlightenment). https://ellengraceobrian.com

Dreaming Beyond What’s Possible

Can you feel the expansion of abundance that’s on the verge of becoming all that you dreamed of and more?  Often, when we are on the cusp of profound transformation, knowing what the next step is can feel a little ambiguous.

When we look to grow beyond the plateau of where we currently stand, this often requires we step into the unknown, discarding the things that have kept us feeling comfortable and safe in the past.  It’s in the willingness to let go of what has been, that are we able to create the magic of what can be.

For me, letting go and dreaming is all about allowing this very magic to flow into my life.  Dreaming of what’s possible can be playful, adventurous and limitless.  Letting go can feel exciting, exhilarating and like a breath of fresh air. Yet, I often ask myself, “Am I dreaming big enough?”  Have you ever asked yourself the same question?  What if we imagined beyond our daily needs and desires?

Join me this month in allowing our minds to reach beyond what’s possible, and dare to dream higher than you’ve ever allowed yourself before.

Making Every Moment Count with Marianne Pestana on The Self Improvement Show with Dr. Irene Conlan

Conlan-player-wide

Make Every Moment Count with Marianne Pestana on The Self Improvement Show with Dr. Irene Conlan, LIVE TODAY, Thursday, March 16th at 12pm PDT/1pm MDT.

New books are published every day. Sometimes we see advertisements about them, get information about them in email or get a pop-up as we surf the net. We may see promotions on YouTube or interviews on the news with an author whose book caught on and is on the way to becoming a best seller or has already hit the top of the bestseller list. Most of us don’t think about what it took to make that happen—the coaching, publicity, bookings, book signings, radio show appearances, and YouTube videos. It takes a lot of work on the part of someone or a group of “someones” to make all of that happen. Our guest today is a literary publicist with clients who have hit the best seller list. She will talk with us about what she does to help her clients succeed in the very competitive literary world. What does it take to get your work noticed and sold? She makes every moment count and will help you learn how to do the same.

The Self Improvement Show with Dr. Irene Conlan

Thursday at 12 Noon Pacific Time on VoiceAmerica Empowerment Channel

The Self Improvement Show was created because almost everyone wants to be better, do better, and achieve more, but we don’t always know how to do that. We aren’t looking for perfection. We are simply trying to improve in ways that allow us more happiness, contentment and success with some laughter along the way. We address issues common to us all and suggest useful tools that will help you tap into your strengths and your wonderful uniqueness. We think most self improvement is an “inside job” so we talk a lot about how to “go within” to make lasting changes. We talk to people who have struggled and won and have great stories to tell as well as those who live ordinary lives in extraordinary ways. The show is laid back, informative and down to earth. The welcome mat is always out and we invite you to join us.

All You Need Is Love

LoveMP
February often has us thinking of Valentine’s Day and romance, but are we truly in love with the most important person in our life?

Think of someone you love unconditionally. How often is that same level of care, affection and devotion showered upon yourself? Typically, this answer falls far short of what we would consider loving behavior. With the ever alive self-critic and stream of negative input from the environment that surrounds us, it’s easy to fall into self disparaging comments and develop beliefs that don’t serve us. Discussions of self-love is often met with the criticism that its narcissistic, self-absorbed or egoistical to dedicate such devotion to yourself, however this couldn’t be further from the truth.

A self-loving practice teaches us to accept ourselves as we are. Love those qualities that make us celebrate and smile as our feet hit the floor every morning and the shadow characteristics, shrouded in pain that cause us to cringe and take shelter from the world. When we honestly love ourselves, the knowledge contained within our heart demands that we treated ourselves as the worthy, loveable, deserving, respected and forever cherished host.

Without loving ourselves first, we have nothing authentic and lasting to give someone else other than a momentary facade and fleeting vision of what we desire to become. Find the truth within your heart and love yourself beyond compare!

Open Heart

OpenHeartMP

One of the most difficult things to master is interpersonal relationships. We meet people from all walks of life that have experiences, challenges, wounds and wisdom that offers a different perspective from our own understanding. So often the stories that we create, our misperceptions and unclear communications can foster misunderstandings where none really exist. Recently I was reminded of this, and the lessons that I took away were priceless.

What I found was that when we are willing to open our hearts, it doesn’t just open us up to potential pain or heartache. For those that have the courage to look deeper, it gives us the opportunity for tremendous growth and freedom. This growth and freedom comes from being able to looking past our pains to the bigger picture for all involved.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle – Plato

When we authentically show up in the world as a living example of our values and morals (without expectations or intentions of others to show up the same), we are in a place of personal power that no one can shake. This allows us to see how others truly are and interact based not in judgement of their pains, but with compassion for them.

How often is it in our day that we gracefully and kindly express what it is that we want in life? Are we honest in how we show up in the world and how we treat others? Are we being true to ourselves and what it is that we stand for? Not sharing common values, doesn’t make the other person bad, it makes them human.

When we are willing not to take things personally and step back far enough to see the perspectives of others, the lesson we take away is that we are all learning, growing and evolving in our own unique way.

I’ve been working with my mentor Judy Goodman to gain a greater understanding on this discussion. To read Judy’s recent newsletter that expands on this topic visit: http://www.judygoodman.com/Newsletter.htm and you’ll understand why many people describe Judy’s insights as beyond conventional wisdom.

How Our Perception Changes Our World

8e9008ae-644b-44ca-89f2-529dc943372a

With so much going on in the world, how we choose to perceive things seems to be more important than ever.  While putting on rose-colored glasses isn’t something that I would suggest, choosing to change our perception of the challenges we face gives us the opportunity not only to shift how we show up in the world, but also allows us the opportunity to view the outer world and our inner world with more compassionate and grace.  This discussion often has me thinking about this quote from the Dalai Lama:

We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.

If we’re having a difficult time liking ourselves, how can we like those around us?  If we allow ourselves to fall into judgement or criticize those that are different, how can we love the uniqueness that we alone bring to the world?

The journey of developing and maintaining inner peace  traverses a road with no end, yet the journey itself offers new vistas, plateaus and valleys of who we really are. Thus granting us a deeper awareness and understanding that we truly are one, regardless of our outer world and differences.
Wishing you much peace, grace and love.

Give It Away

654120dd-946a-4821-b59a-18f2fb6afde5I recently attended a workshop that Judy Goodman spoke at in Denver, Colorado, and she said something that resonated with me to the core.

“Whatever is lacking in your life, give it away and it will return to you seven-fold”

What a true statement that is!  As I look back at some of the difficult times in my own life, when I had felt exceptionally lonely, disconnected or was having a difficult time, reaching out and being of service is what got me through.

Staying connected with others is often a very conscious act, requiring that we make the effort and that time is involved. In a world where we are the most connect and at the same time the most disconnected, finding “time” to reach out and spend with others or being of service is often pushed to the back burner. This brings the cycle full circle, often returning us to our starting point of feeling alone and disconnected.

If you are missing something in your life, I urge you to give it away to others with an open heart. Your life will be more full than you could ever imagine.

Premonitions of Death Saved This Woman’s Life

19418e2e-130a-4de8-8033-7732cbab415dAfter months of premonitions, Stephanie suffered an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) in May 2013, seconds after her second child, Jacob, was born. She was clinically dead for 37 seconds. It was the actions of one doctor taking heed of Stephanie’s concerns that saved her life!

Several months prior to suffering the AFE, she was diagnosed with a complete placenta previa, which can cause serious complications during delivery.  Following this discovery, Stephanie experienced overwhelming premonitions of doom.  She told many people about her anxiety and her premonitions (not making it through the delivery, the baby being fine, her need for a hysterectomy, a rare occurrence of a potential marriage between the placenta and the uterus, among others), including her doctors in New York and Chicago, but was not taken seriously. Living a Heart Centered Life

d4eb4516-9959-4f87-801a-b5618167b1f3

The fabulous individuals that I am interviewing this month really bring to light, and serve as a reminder, how important living a heart centered life is. So how can I shift my life to be more heart centered? Is it possible to develop deeper relationships, not only with others but most importantly myself?

Let me share with you a couple of secrets that worked for me when I started on my path. Part of my everyday routine, begins and ends in gratitude. There is always so much to be grateful for, no matter what is happening. I find that by shifting my focus on what I’m thankful for allows me to see the world in a different way. It’s so easy to engage with others in a bit of complaining or gossip, but this contagious habit can spread like a cancer in your life if left unchecked. By shifting focus and choosing to look for all things positive (and believe me… there were some days I had to stand pretty far back to see a glimmer of positivity!) I have found that there is little that can happen in my day that throws me off my path.

The second secret I would like to share with you is a very simple, yet profound blessing that you can silently do for anyone. It’s called Heart to Heart at www.JudyGoodman.com I have personally seen the miraculous happen when doing this blessing. The caveat is this blessing is done with no expectation or intentions for the other person, you are only the conduit for the blessing to occur, thus allowing the Universe to work it’s magic. Now who doesn’t want a more magical life!

Both of these secrets are simple, yet very important in making significant change. Life is merely an illusion, it is an invention of our thoughts, beliefs, feelings and perceptions. So let’s choose to have an experience that feeds our soul and allows us to live

Remember to tune in this month as I explore how to show up and live life from the Heart!

Moving Into New Beginnings

NewBegin

Spring is in the air and every thing is moving into a new beginning!  So how can we move into a new beginning in our own lives?  It’s simple to do the normal spring cleaning in our home, car and office, but sometimes the most difficult changes could be doing a little spring cleaning in our personal lives.  Much of this can be done by how we choose to see the world and how we choose to interact with others.  This quote from Judy Goodman is a great reminder of the power that each of us possess in determining what type of experience we will have.

“Every day is a new beginning.  Plan ahead for for what you would like that beginning to look like.  Remember that every thing is about the choices we make!” – Judy Goodman

Waking up and choosing to have a good day, not taking things personally, being kind with your words (including towards yourself!) and taking the initiative to reach out to others in kindness is a great start!

Join me in planning ahead  by choosing not to complain for the next 30 days.  By watching our words, it will help shift our experience into a positive one, regardless what his happening around us. Let’s move our focus towards what we are grateful for in our lives.  Making this shift in perspective will change your life!

Choosing Hope

KaitlinKaitlin Roig-DeBellis is the first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School who saved her entire class of fifteen six- and-seven-year-olds from the tragic events that took place on December 14, 2012, by piling them into a single-occupancy bathroom within her classroom, mere feet from the brutal and indiscriminate massacre taking place outside the door. Since then, despite the unimaginably painful experiences she endured, she has chosen to share her experience with others, in the hope that they too can find light in dark moments.

Kaitlin is the Founder & Executive Director of Classes 4 Classes, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization. Kaitlin founded Classes 4 Classes knowing that positive social change was needed, and that this needed to begin with the youngest members of our society, our K-8 students. Classes 4 Classes is a social networking tool, for every student in the United States to learn: compassion, caring, kindness, empathy, consideration, through active engagement. Classes 4 Classes has worked with over 1,000 students in 10 states. In 2015 they are expanding to all 50 states.

Choosing Hope is a lot of things. A written witness to a tragedy that will never be forgotten. A gripping firsthand testament to the power of good over the power of destruction. An inspirational memoir by a brave young woman whose story is one of courage, heroism, faith, and resilience. And a celebration of all the people who make the choice to pass along their hope and positivity to young ones—parents, mentors, and especially teachers. There is no moving on, but there is always moving forward. And how we move forward is a choice.

You can visit Choose Hope & Classes 4 Classes Here!

“Teachers rescue children every day by teaching them the skills they need to succeed in life.  But no teacher expects to have to rescue her students from a deadly attack.  Kaitlin Roig’s quick thinking and swift action saved her students’ lives. In her book, Choosing Hope, Kaitlin honors the memory of the children and educators whose lives were lost on that sad day.” — Mrs. Laura Bush, Former First Lady of the United States

Choosing Hope is a stirring memoir, capturing not only the brutality of the Sandy Hook tragedy but the incredible heroism, resilience and grace that emerged in its wake. Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis’s deep love for her students makes this a bold, inspiring and ultimately hopeful book.”  — Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post and author of the New York Times bestseller Thrive

3 Tips to Get Over Valentine’s Day Blues

Happiness

Are you stuck in your PJs feeling like the month of February should be stricken from the calendar? With Valentine’s Day over, you now find yourself in either one of two categories; You feel elated that there was finally some much needed, romantic down time with your special someone, or are you feeling a bit blue because Valentine’s Day is just another reminder that you’re single and your “romantic dance card” looks more like the cast of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

If you find yourself in the later category, then these 3 simple tips will have you refocusing and finding love in your everyday life!

1) Let go of what love should look like and stand in appreciation of all the love that is currently in your life. This can be love from your family, friends, pets, strangers showing you “love” by opening doors or something as simple as a smile. You will not only become a happier person (who doesn’t want to be that!) but you will attract more loving relationships into your life. What a win-win situation and joy to be in!

2) Fix yourself up for YOU! Regardless where you are going during the day, headed out to get gas or pick up some groceries, tidy up your hair, makeup and clothing. The more you have pride in how you look the more confident you will become.  We all have different body types so don’t’ compare, love that uniqueness that is yours alone. The greatest love story of your life should be falling in love with yourself and the beautiful person that you are. Everything after that is just icing on the cake!

3) Give it away! If you are looking for love in your life and there isn’t any to be found, give it away.  Look to see what local charity you can be involved with, visit a nursing home spending time with some of the residents or help a neighbor with their groceries. When you give love away, it comes back to you!

Practicing these three steps will change how you view the world around you.  There is a happy life waiting for you, all you have to do is shift perspectives and show up.

Seeing Possibilities Through Blindness

12043154_10207987151656373_4668567603647150912_n

Endurance athlete Dan Berlin of Team See Possibilities doesn’t let the onset of blindness that developed later in his life slow him down. This go-getter is making history as he encourages other to “see possibilities” regardless of their situation.  Dan grew up in the chocolate town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and now co-owns Rodelle, one of the world’s leading vanilla extract companies, in Colorado where he lives with his wife and two children.

Over the course of twenty years, Dan gradually lost his eyesight from cone-rod dystrophy. He struggled with the limitations of his new reality, but instead of simply feeling sorry for himself, he came up with a new way to approach the rest of his life. He decided, despite his blindness, to become a marathoner.

Dan has since run twelve marathons, including NYC and Boston, completed two Half Ironman triathlons, completed the Rim to Rim to Rim: running across the Grand Canyon and back nonstop. He is the first blind person ever to complete this intimidating challenge. His most recent accomplishment was making history by being the first blind athlete to complete the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in a single day.

Accompanied by three guides at Team See Possibilities, who are constantly looking for new iconic locations for Dan to become the first blind athlete to complete a major test of physical fitness.  He’s in great company with a team consisting highly notable individuals themselves; Charles Scott who left a 14 year career at Intel Corporation to develop the Family Adventure Guy, which has been featured in National Geographic and is an author who raises money for charities as he competes in endurance challenges,  Alison Qualter Berna is a proud mother of three and co-founder of Apple Seeds, a children’s play space based in New York City. Alison has worked in production at NBC after graduating from Princeton University and has also started and managed a global sports program called Sports for Development at UNICEF, and Brad Graff a Harvard Business School graduate and formal Naval Officer, who recently ended his 17 year career at Intel Corporation.

While it took some training, nothing could prepare the guides for the task ahead. Alison talks about how “she really needed to be more confident in herself in order to complete the run and guiding Dan allowed her to share something extraordinarily powerful with someone that needed her.”

Dan stumbled many times while crossing the Grand Canyon, but he never give us. “He lives a life on what’s possible and then makes it happen” Alison shares. It’s Dan’s goal to encourage both children and adults suffering from blindness to move beyond limitations and to think about new possibilities.

Finding Love in Your Day

Love

As the month of February begins, many of us are drawn to thoughts of Valentine’s Day, where it’s expected that we should shower our special loved one with token devotions of our love.  But what if your relationship isn’t all that great or you’re single and starting to feel a little down because another Valentine’s Day is on the horizon without a viable romantic interest in sight?

Have you every looked around to see the love that already surrounds you on a daily basis?  The type of Love I’m talking about isn’t romantic by any means, but the outpouring of caring and compassion towards others.

I wake up everyday, deeply grateful for all of the amazing, and wonderful people in my life and the love they bless me with.  I have learned that if we let go of what love should look like and stand in appreciation of the love that is currently in our lives, not only are we happier people (who doesn’t want to be that!) but we will attract more loving relationships into our lives.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Alan Cohen, and one of his quotes speaks so eloquently to this.  “You can only see in someone else what you see in yourself”. How can I be a good  boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, neighbor, friend or member of my community and love others if I have yet to fall in love with who it is that I am?

As my mentor Judy Goodman said in her latest newsletter, “Whatever is lacking in your own life, give it away to another person”.  If you are not feeling loved, have you been loving towards your friends and family.  How about a stranger?  A simple smile, opening the door for someone, offering to help at a local soup kitchen or letting someone get in the lane in front of you can be a simple, yet profound gesture of love.

This month I am encouraging all of my friends (and this includes you!) to find love in your everyday journey.

A Course in Miracles (ACIM)—the self-study spiritual-thought system that teaches the way to love and forgiveness—has captured the minds and hearts of millions of people, and delivered inner peace where fear and pain once prevailed. Happy 2016!

12400930_1000886326650486_4116867371275972786_n

With the start of this New Year, there is so much to be grateful for.  All of the wonderful people and events that have graced my life during the past year have brilliantly paved the way for the magnificence that is yet to come.  This I know this to be true for each of us, if we believe it to be so.

Recently, I rediscovered a quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer that adds spark my experience whenever I read it.

“When you stay on purpose and refuse to be discouraged by fear, you align with the infinite self in which all possibilities exist”

What an encouraging reminder and what a powerful place to stand in the world…  empowered, passionate and in full faith of our abilities.

For this coming year and all the years to come, I wish you a life where your heart sings in the morning as you wake up and that you stand in the knowing that you are capable of greatness!

Make Every Moment Count!
