Finding Moments of Kindness, Empathy, and Calm

The world seems to be in so much turmoil and discord.  So how can we improve conditions not only for ourselves, but for those around us, and the planet?  Where can we find places of calm within ourselves?

Over the years of hosting the award-winning Moments with Marianne Radio Show, one thing that I have found to be a constant is that we are only able to change our actions and reactions to events, people, or places.

If someone is harsh, rude, or having a melt down, perhaps they are having a rough day that we can’t even begin to understand.  We never know the personal battles and struggles that others go through, what challenges they are facing, or what has brought them to the point of where they are today.

Offering a little empathy, patience, understanding, and silent prayer, can shift the energy of a situation, whether we see it or not.  It’s the little acts that we do on a daily basis that determine the kind of experience we’ll have, and the kind of person we are showing up in the world as.  This colors our perspective of the world, how we view it, and all of the events that take place, either “good or bad”,  as an opportunity for further our personal or professional growth.

Go out of your way to be kind and compassionate towards others, if they acknowledge what you have done or not.  Hold the door open for the person behind you, help a handicap person put their groceries in their car or get a cart, talk to people around you with as much love and compassion as you wish to be treated with.

Together we can all make our experience, and the experience of others a little better every day.  Now doesn’t that change your world?

Jason Eastwood of Guitarfulness Celebrates the Release of New Album ‘Living Room Ballads’

Jason Eastwood of Guitarfulness Celebrates the Release of New Album ‘Living Room Ballads’

Jason Eastwood of Guitarfulness” has just released his new album “Living Room Ballads”. His music has been shared around the world to create spaces of calm and relaxation at work, home, yoga studios, meditation centers, spas, and retreat centers. His quest is to raise the vibration of his listeners’ journey and provide beautiful relief from the stresses of the modern planet.

In 2014, outwardly it seemed as though Eastwood was living the dream life, but inwardly everything was unraveling. Seeking a way to cope with the stress, anxiety, and chaos of the music industry, he sought out yoga and meditation as a way to cope. Eastwood began studying healing music from around the world and incorporated this knowledge into his own music. Soon Eastwood was composing and performing this type of music on his handmade classical guitar, often hearing his music called “the most relaxing guitar in the world”.

Music has been shown to have a powerful effect on the mind and can be used as a tool for healing and promoting well-being. Here are a few ways in which relaxing music can promote healing:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Listening to music has been shown to have a calming effect and can help to reduce stress and anxiety. A study in the Journal of Advanced Nursing found that listening to music reduced stress levels by 68%.
  • Improves mood: Music has the ability to evoke emotions and can be used to improve mood. A study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that listening to soothing music improved overall well-being.
  • Enhances sleep quality: Slow and relaxing music can help to promote a peaceful sleep. A study published in the Journal of Music Therapy found that listening to slow, meditative music before bedtime improved sleep quality.
  • Increases focus and concentration: Music can also help to improve focus and concentration. A study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management found that listening to music improved cognitive performance.
  • Promotes brain plasticity: Music has been shown to promote brain plasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience found that listening to classical music improved cognitive abilities.

Jason Eastwood started playing the guitar at age of 11, and over the last four decades, the guitar has been an extension of his mind, body, and soul. After touring extensively with various musical acts and sharing stages with musical icons such as The Beach Boys, Journey, and Boston, Eastwood completed a Bachelor of Composition and a Master’s in Musicology at Dalhousie University, where he is also an instructor.

Seeing Opportunities in Challenges

When faced with overwhelming bills, relationships difficulties, oppressive bosses, unreasonable clients, over booked schedules, never ending to-do list, aggressive people along our path or difficulties with health, are you viewing these as challenges or opportunities?

While most people would view these as difficulties or life altering events, shifting perspective can not only change how you feel about the situation, but also the outcome.

The world will offer to you, what you choose to see in it

If we ask ourselves  “What am I supposed to learn here?” it shifts the energy of the situation. This moves us from a victim mentality of things happening to us, to one of opportunity, learning and growth. This simple question can change our world. We instantly become inquisitive about the the world around us and move from problem defining into problem solving.  This empowering view is a process that you can get excited about.  How can I shift the energy from where I am to where I want to be?

Reflecting on this phrase can change the energy of what we perceive is taking place, how we react to a given situation and more importantly, what can be learned as we become aware of the bigger picture and step outside of our individual pain or fear.

In the end, isn’t it all about our perception?  Are we having a good life experience where we choose to see the positive in everything we are faced with, or one that is fraught with individualized fear & pain?  Either way, it’s all a choice.

Navigating to Inner Peace

With so much chaos in the world, it can seem impossible to find a place of peace, let alone peace within ourselves. We often hear that world peace begins with us, but how do we navigate from where we are to where we want to be? This quote from the Dalai Lama has always been a golden reminder that obtaining peace begins with us.
“Changing the world for the better begins with individuals creating inner peace within themselves.” – Dalai Lama
When our own hearts and minds become peaceful, so does our world.

Inner peace can sometimes seem like a difficult thing to accomplish, like an out-of-reach level of enlightenment that’s only obtained by yogis or spiritual masters. But this is not the case. We go through life shouldering the baggage of someone else’s story, their programmed behaviors and limiting beliefs. If we listen to what is really being said, in the background the distorted messages of “You’re not good enough,” “You’ll never amount to anything,” and “You’re not worthy,” are really old recordings of a story that someone else decided to believe.

Perhaps our great-grandparents were told this by their parents and then shared that with their children. Perhaps a boss hears that from a supervisor on a daily basis and continues the cycle with his employees. Maybe it’s something that a coach or mentor has said with the intent in offering “constructive criticism,” but instead delivers a heartbreaking pain that lasts a lifetime. However it shows up, it’s a limited belief that is then handed down as if it’s a right of passage.

In all of this you have a choice. You can choose to believe what you have been told, or question everything and develop new beliefs about yourself, what you value and who it is that you are. You are worthy, you are amazing, you are always good enough, and so much more. When you know this in your heart to be true, the inner dialogue quiets and you are left with a new way of being, one that has brought you to the the path of inner peace. As every journey begins with a single step, so does your path toward developing inner peace.

Featured Guest: Judy Goodman, CPC, CSRC, CRC, Speaker, Professional Coach and Award-Winning Author of Journey… The Quest of the Soul, Shares Her Global Work.

by staff writer Victoria Davis

Judy Goodman is an award-winning author, highly recognized motivational speaker, devoted mother, beloved grandmother and, as others put it, a “teacher of teachers.” For many years, she was immersed in the high-profile public work-force, even being involved in negotiations between Russia and The United States regarding an aircraft of the future. But over 35 years ago, Goodman decided to devote her time entirely to what she says was “always my destiny”— guiding people along both the physical and metaphysical journey of life.

“I was born walking in two different worlds,” said Goodman, who is internationally recognized for being a certified professional coach helping clients of all backgrounds and ages, find healing from addiction and trauma. “I knew I was different, I just didn’t know how far that was going to take me.”

Goodman is a trained hypnotherapist and her work, as a teacher and counselor, has taken her all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Europe, Egypt, and Peru, and has given her the chance to meet with many public figures and celebrities. One of the achievements she is very proud of is her audio book, ‘Journey…The Quest of the Soul,’ which has been downloaded in twenty-three countries.  Goodman was a bit ahead of her time when she decided to make the book ‘audio,’ and subsequently re-mastered it into a digital format, allowing it to be downloaded all over the world.

“It’s a book about life’s questions,” said Goodman, “a place that answers those thoughts you might not know how to ask.”

Journey tackles seemingly out-of-reach subjects like the afterlife, the existence of angels and other realms, and the interpretation of dreams. True to her notable workshop and teaching ability, Goodman’s audio book is over four hours of unscripted answers. After the earlier overwhelming acceptance of the audio book, Goodman recently re-released her work on iTunes, CDBaby and Amazon. Journey was also the recipient of the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award. Readers have reviewed her work as “Life changing,” “Moved to tears,” and “Beyond conventional wisdom.”

Having served as a Kaiser Institute faculty member, working with professional individuals to develop their intuitive abilities, as well as being a founding board member of The HeartLight Center in Denver, a center for grief support and education, Goodman has had the chance to interact with a variety of clients, from all over the world. She adds that Journey isn’t saturated in case studies or recorded philosophy, rather it is founded on her own understanding, experiences and the knowledge she was born with.

“I’m much more spiritual than I am religious,” said Goodman. “This book embraces most religions because I believe there’s a bit of truth in almost every religious doctrine. We all believe in something; my job isn’t to change people’s belief system, it’s to encourage them to ask questions. The gift I receive from my work is that I have learned something from every person that has crossed my path.”

Goodman has long been recognized for her motivational quotes and is currently completing a book of her original work, written over the last 35 years. The title of her soon to be released work is “Changing Your Reality.” The book is full of pictures, many of which were taken by the author herself.  Each motivational statement written by Goodman will also feature additional thoughts of how it might be applied to the reader’s life.  At this time Goodman anticipates a release in mid-to-late, 2019.

“This will be one of those things you’re going to keep on your bedside table or on your coffee table,” said Goodman. “It’s one of those books you can pick up and find a saying that will help you pretty much any day of the year.”

Goodman states that the industry has taught her a great deal about releasing her work, and plans to release a digital version, along with a print on demand copy. She adds, “When I write, the words just flow, and it’s almost sequential. It isn’t about being that smart, I think it’s just because I’m doing the right thing in my life.”

John Assaraf’s Innercise Defines the Difference Between ‘Interested’ and ‘Committed’

John Assaraf’s Innercise Defines the Difference Between ‘Interested’ and ‘Committed’

by staff writer Victoria Davis

Brain blocks are a part of everyday life. It might come in the form of procrastination, where an assignment or project just seems too daunting to even begin. It could also look like depression, giving up on goals due to previous failures, or even the mere thought of failing. Whether it’s a physical, mental or emotional block, New York Times bestselling author and entrepreneur John Assaraf believes it can all be overcome with this question: “Are you ‘interested’ or are you ‘committed?’ This is the foundation of Assaraf’s latest book, Innercise: The New Science to Unlock Your Brain’s Hidden Power.

Having started as a high school drop-out with patchy—and not entirely law abiding—minimum wage work experience, Assaraf says in the intro of his book that he had a “shallow” understanding of success. Even after receiving life-changing guidance from a successful business tycoon, building five multi-million-dollar companies and appearing on shows like Larry King and Ellen, Assaraf says this “life in the fast lane” cost him his health, his family and his sanity. What makes Innercise unique, is it’s not a get-rich-quick scheme or a book of brain games. It’s an honest and scientific approach about living life to the fullest.

The book begins with a quote by Napoleon Hill, reading, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” This sets the tone for the rest of Assaraf’s work, constantly driving home the point that our brains are masterpieces of engineering at our ambition’s disposal. We can do whatever we set our minds to, using the same mind-over-matter exercises used by pro athletes, Navy SEALS, CEOs and astronauts. But there is another point Assaraf aims for audiences to understand—there must be a balance between “success” and “survival.”

There are three parts to Assaraf’s book: “Know Thy Brain,” “Master Your Thoughts and Emotions” and “Master Your Behavior.” The first part of the book dives into the nooks and crannies of our brains, where thousands upon thousands of neurons are firing away to make the system function. We are “goal setting machines,” according to Assaraf, but our brain’s primary purpose is to ensure our survival, not our success. However, by using the tools our bodies were born with, there can be a balance between our health and our happiness. This, in turn, allows us to fully and sanely commit to our ambitions, rather than harboring a mere interest, only following through with what is convenient.

Not only is Innercise a book that helps unlock the secrets to success but is refreshing in the way Assaraf illustrates how to thrive in business, relationships and personal health. Though it relies heavily on professional research, the chapters are not crowded with scientific jargon. Rather, it draws audiences in with common thoughts, feelings and emotions the average dreamer wrestles with. This not only makes the book easier to understand, but also makes it more relatable, helping readers to understand what it means to fully “commit” to the life you imagined for yourself.

Finding Hope & Forgiveness

How can we cultivate hope and forgiveness during our darkest hour?  With each tragedy our society endures, it feels as if we’re slipping into the abyss of a “new normal”.  This is something that we must fight against, not by pushing it away with anger, hatred or fear. Through the lens of compassion, it’s clear to see that we are not so dissimilar from one another.  It’s in realizing those similarities that the sparks of hope and forgiveness are fueled.

Practicing compassion, forgiveness, love, and kindness, with ourselves and everyone around us, can impact the world in ways we may never fully comprehend. Living a life of greater love for one another starts by seeing the divinity in each person that crosses our path. Sometimes this might be difficult to do, but it’s in recognizing this, everything changes.

Moving Through Loss

Most of us know the five stages of grief, but for the heart loss isn’t something that can be quantified and there is no set time to move from one stage to another.  All we can do is take one difficult day after another, allowing time and love to heal the wound.

Whether it be a family member, beloved pet, friend, the Queen of Soul or a decorated War Hero, there’s a measure of grief for who they were and the legacy they leave in our world.

The loss of their brilliant light is palpable, yet we are better for having spent time in their glow. It’s been said that the pain we feel when we lose someone is equally to the love we had for them.

But how do we move through these losses? The truth is, there’s no wrong way, but there is a way. We move through loss by paying tribute to those we have loved, even from afar. We share their pictures, notes, memories, and words of wisdom. We honor their values and character by emulating those best qualities, so their legacy can live on in others. As difficult as it might be, we re-engage with those around us, even if it’s a little at a time. Over time, the pain will drift away, but their impact in our lives will forged be in our hearts and actions.

Changing Perspectives

Whether social, political, ecological or even philosophical, the way we view the world and the people in it are directly related to the way we live our lives. Everyone has their favorite restaurants, stores, communal hang-outs and so on. It’s not wrong to have a routine, but getting stuck living on repeat is another story. Staying in our own bubbles can stunt our world views causing us to shut down, which often makes us feel alone and isolated.  It’s a vast world outside these routines that’s begging us to give in to the adventure that’s calling, and connect with others in a more meaningful way.

While it’s easy to hop on a plane and jet off to some new land—exploring new cultures, ideas and lifestyles—it’s equally important to get to know the multi-cultural atmosphere that makes up our own countries, neighborhoods and cities. It’s by exploring this diversity that we can change our perspective about life, and about those with whom we share this planet. “Exploring,” could mean anything from trying a new eatery, becoming involved in a new organization or attending an event that you’ve been wanting to experience.

There are so many beautiful places to visit and billions of beautiful souls to meet. If we’re lucky, we get about 100 years on this earth. Don’t waste a single moment. Open up your soul to the world and let it breathe by circulating in the oxygen of many atmospheres, and get ready to see more beauty than you imagined.

How To Get To Heaven (Without Really Dying) by Robert Kopecky

In Robert Kopecky‘s latest book, How To Get To Heaven (Without Really Dying), which was just released through Llewellyn (March 2018), the reader is given a clear, and easy to understanding account of what it’s like to have a Near Death Experience (NDE) and how we can transform our lives.

It’s often reported by those who have gone through an NDE, that they have a clear awareness of being in on the other side. When they return, many of the experiencers report a deep and profound connection with everything, and a sense of enlightenment that expands within their lives.  Near Death Experiencers also have reported an overwhelming sense of love, both in feeling loved and a deep love for everyone and everything around them. It’s as if they see their life, their purpose and connection to the Divine with new eyes.  But do we all have to go through trauma of a NDE to experience such nirvana?

Having gone through three NDEs himself, Kopecky outlines his experiences and lessons that each encounter has brought.  With these insights, Kopecky shares how to create “Heaven on Earth” without having to go through the trauma of experiencing an NDE.

“Once we begin to recognize the real magic around us and experience a little bit of Heaven for ourselves…  we might take up permanent residency there.” – Robert Kopecky

Kopecky’s book beautifully outlines how to creating paradise in our lives is not only possible, but something we all can strive for. With simple to use techniques and tools, How To Get To Heaven (Without Really Dying) is a must read for anyone looking to obtain the enlightenment experience.

My recommendation for How To Get To Heaven (Without Really Dying), is located on the back cover.  Make sure to pick up your copy today and create the magic you’ve been missing.

You Are Never Alone

Over the last few weeks, we have been touched by the untimely passing of several people who have encouraged us to live in bold and adventurous ways.

While as shocking as this was, I would like to say that regardless of what is going on, no matter how desolate your heart may feel at times, you are never truly alone.

One of the most valuable lessons my coach Judy Goodman CPC, CSRC, CRC has taught me is if you feel lonely and need a friend, be a friend to someone.  If you are sad and need comforting, comfort someone in need.  When we give away what we are looking to obtain in our lives, it shows up in profound ways.

One great resource to find volunteer opportunities in your area is Volunteer Match.  If you are looking to connect with people in your area or for a cause that is close to your heart, this is the place for you!

Namkung’s These Violent Delights Depicts True to Life Ends

By Victoria Davis, staff writer & journalist

Just in the last couple months, the world of sports, Hollywood and popular news networks have exploded with sexual assault and harassment accusations. 83 women, according to USA Today, have come forward claiming sexual harassment from producer Harvey Weinstein. CBS fired veteran journalist Charlie Rose due to allegations of sexual misconduct and Olympic Gymnastics physician Larry Nassar has been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after 156 female athletes spoke out about decades of enduring the doctor’s sexual abuse.

Some might say that the world has changed, that sexual predators are lurking on our doorsteps more than ever before. Victoria Namkung, author of These Violent Delights, believes the world has not become more dangerous, but that people are just more aware.

“Because of social media and all these new websites that weren’t around when I was growing up in the 80s, we have access to see more than we used to,” said Namkung. “We can see what children are missing, where sex offenders live in our area. If someone makes an accusation, it’s put on the internet almost right away.”

This newfound awareness, knowing that they are not alone, has helped to support women, and men, coming forward and sharing their stories. This, in turn, has given journalists and authors like Namkung the opportunity to share those stories with the world.

These Violent Delights was just published at the start of this month and has already received raving reviews on Goodreads, with over 60% being four or five stars. The book tells the story of three women who, while attending an all-girls private high school in Los Angeles, experience sexual advances from their married English teacher, Dr. Gregory Copeland. Caryn, Eva and Sasha are all from different graduating classes at Windemere and all had different encounters with Dr. Copeland. But when Caryn publishes an essay titled, “My Tenth-Grade Teacher Claims He Fell In Love With Me,” during her college internship at the Los Angeles Daily, the three women realize they have more in common than they thought. Caryn’s essay kick-starts an investigation and, with the help of esteemed reporter Jane March, the women begin the process of healing, finding justice and making peace with their everyday lives.

Namkung takes an interesting approach to this story, with each chapter narrating the first-person perspective of one of the four women. The first few chapters alternate between narrations from Caryn and Jane, but as Eva and Sasha enter the picture, the chapters become more diverse. This was an extraordinary choice of storytelling because it brings the reader into the heart and soul of each women. They are not just mothers, writers or victims. They are people with deeps hurts and pains. The varying first-person perspectives also helped distinguish what make each woman different and how each of their experiences with Copeland impacted them individually.

Having used her journalism skills to interview real victims and private school students and teachers for her book, Namkung creates an emotional journey that is real and raw. The accounts of Sasha and Eva specifically are very detailed, recalling instances of groping, intercourse and emotional abuse post-relationship from Copeland. However, this makes up only a portion of the story. These Violent Delights also covers Caryn’s feelings of estrangement from her family, Sasha’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Jane’s compensation for past mistakes and corruption within private schools and their board members.

Perhaps one of the most overpowering topics addressed in this book is the effects of severe mental disorders. The sociopathic and pedophilia state of mind is expressed, not through a man in a black hoodie hiding in the bushes and waiting to attack, but in a seemingly typical family man and beloved teacher.

“Most of these predators are found to be people that look normal,” said Namkung. “We see them everyday and they can even be people we’ve known for a long time and trust.”

As the women in the book sort through their experiences one step at a time, the reader will go through the same process. Things that didn’t raise red-flags in the earlier chapters will set off alarms toward the book’s conclusion.  One of these examples being when Caryn says in the book, “I remember he [Copeland] told me his students were his friends during the interview I did with him so many years ago. At the time, I didn’t realize how sad and strange that sounded.”

Despite the heartbreaking stories and emotional toll this story takes on one’s soul, Namkung leaves readers with hope rather than hopelessness, that a happy life after trauma is possible and that when one of us speaks out, the rest will raise their voices. Justice is not perfect, and the world is filled with uncertainty. While we don’t always get the answers we ask for, These Violent Delights speaks truth that when someone takes a chance and reaches out their hand, someone will be there to help pull them up.

“I want women and men to feel empowered to speak out against the things that are wrong in this world,” said Namkung. “They are not alone, all it takes is one person.”

Dreaming Beyond What’s Possible

Can you feel the expansion of abundance that’s on the verge of becoming all that you dreamed of and more?  Often, when we are on the cusp of profound transformation, knowing what the next step is can feel a little ambiguous.

When we look to grow beyond the plateau of where we currently stand, this often requires we step into the unknown, discarding the things that have kept us feeling comfortable and safe in the past.  It’s in the willingness to let go of what has been, that are we able to create the magic of what can be.

For me, letting go and dreaming is all about allowing this very magic to flow into my life.  Dreaming of what’s possible can be playful, adventurous and limitless.  Letting go can feel exciting, exhilarating and like a breath of fresh air. Yet, I often ask myself, “Am I dreaming big enough?”  Have you ever asked yourself the same question?  What if we imagined beyond our daily needs and desires?

Join me this month in allowing our minds to reach beyond what’s possible, and dare to dream higher than you’ve ever allowed yourself before.

Forgiving the Unforgivable

What does it mean to truly forgive somebody, on every level and for everything? I used to think that I had a great capacity for forgiveness and that, over the years, I had developed a deeper level of compassion for those that had slighted me, understanding that they are often operating out of an unresolved pain or trauma. However, my belief in my abilities was shattered and dramatically changed after watching the movie The Shack.

The film, based off the book by William P. Young, follows the journey of Mack Phillips who spends a weekend with a trio of individuals, each personifying God, at an old shack in the woods. The story takes place after a man called, “The little lady killer” kidnaps and murders Mack’s youngest daughter while the family is on a camping trip. While the rest of the family attempt to move through the pain, Mack falls into a deep depression that spurs doubt regarding his beliefs. The topics of forgiveness, judgement and love are discussed in a whole new way and eventually brings Mack back to peace, healing and a deeper level on his personal beliefs, changing him forever.

Watching this movie was an eye-opening experience that left me questioning how deep my level of forgiveness was. Did I truly forgive everyone with an open heart? Even if it was something unforgivable?

Every painful moment can be traced back to an initial heartache or trauma someone has endured, usually at the hands of another. The root of this suffering is often not easily visible to the person experiencing the pain. Yet, if we are willing to step back and see the entire story, the reason someone might have wronged us becomes clear. While this doesn’t condone behavior or activity that goes against social and moral conduct, it offers us the opportunity to be more compassionate and objective when forgiving someone, being careful to not get caught up in the energy of their story. If we are willing to step back and look at the bigger picture, we find that, while each of us is unique, we are not all that dissimilar.

As expressed in The Shack, we were made to love and forgive. That is our legacy to the world. Love is the answer to all things and the greatest gift we can give one another. But the first step to giving love is receiving peace. And how is it possible to receive peace? By freeing ourselves with forgiveness and approaching all situations with the same compassion and wisdom we would like to see in others. I encourage you to break the chains of resentment and find a way to peace, in all of your relationships, even if it means forgiving the unforgivable. As my mentor Judy Goodman has taught me, forgiveness doesn’t mean condoning what someone has done, it’s about freedom & peace. You deserve to have peace in your life! Only then will we be on track to living the life we desire — a loving, joyful and fulfilling one.

Mindfulness as a Path to Self-Care

While out walking the other day, it seemed like I had just stepped into the perfect day. The sun was shining, a gentle breeze was blowing and birds were singing as my thoughts wandered to the topic of mindfulness as a path to self-care. While self-care and mindfulness are not new topics, both still offer a greater shift in perspective when we choose to dive deeper into the practice of caring for our mind, body and spirit.

Many times, self-care only captures our attentions while we are on vacation or out of town on some far away trip, miles away from the typical stresses of everyday life. Self-care is often placed at the very bottom of a never-ending list of things to do. Meanwhile, busy work and being overly connected take center stage in our lives, drowning out our body’s cry for some major tender loving care.

But how important is it to devote time to ourselves? Can we really find moments in our already overbooked schedules and hectic lives to develop a solid routine of self-care?

When the topic of mindfulness finally does surface above the daily noise, it is often thought we need to have a serene place, void of distractions to develop a state of awareness with everything around us and, most importantly, with ourselves.  However, cultivating mindfulness as part of a self-care regimen can take place anywhere, regardless of what is going on around you. The advantages of this practice can be immense.

Science has now proven the wide range of benefits derived from practicing a state of mindfulness as a path to self-care. These benefits include…

  • Reduction in anxiety and stress
  • Improved cognition
  • Elevated happiness, contentment and gratitude
  • Increased immune function
  • Boost in memory
  • Improved moods
  • Slowing of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Increased creativity
  • Lowered blood pressure

I would like to share with you a very simple mindfulness exercise that I use on a daily basis which only takes a couple of minutes.  It doesn’t matter if you are at your desk, just got off a phone call with a difficult client or you’re feeling generally overwhelmed. This practice can bring you back to center allowing you to focus on what is truly important — your inner peace.

Close your eyes (not while driving) and focus on your breathing.  Feel the expansion of your body with each inhalation and rhythmic flow as each exhalation leaves the body. Clear your mind. When thoughts arise without judgement, gently allow those thoughts to drift away while bringing your attention back to your breathing.

Initially, it might seem like a battle to win over the quiet moments of your mind, but with each practice it gets easier and the times that you experience peacefulness will last longer. In time, you’ll find that it’s extremely easy to drop into a mindfulness state and that those few moments allow you to recharge quickly.

This simple mindfulness tool has allowed me to remain centered and focused over the years even during a bustling workday. You see, it’s not about finding the perfectly quiet and serene place to refocus and find your peace. It’s about finding the mindfulness practice that is the perfect fit for you, plus getting in the habit of using that practice to improve your self-care if even for a moment.

Our minds, bodies and souls are always working hard, so show yourself some love and take a deep breath. Kick off your shoes. Find your center. I hope it brings you peace like it has for me.

Make Every Moment Count with Marianne Pestana on The Self Improvement Show with Dr. Irene Conlan, LIVE TODAY, Thursday, March 16th at 12pm PDT/1pm MDT.

New books are published every day. Sometimes we see advertisements about them, get information about them in email or get a pop-up as we surf the net. We may see promotions on YouTube or interviews on the news with an author whose book caught on and is on the way to becoming a best seller or has already hit the top of the bestseller list. Most of us don’t think about what it took to make that happen—the coaching, publicity, bookings, book signings, radio show appearances, and YouTube videos. It takes a lot of work on the part of someone or a group of “someones” to make all of that happen. Our guest today is a literary publicist with clients who have hit the best seller list. She will talk with us about what she does to help her clients succeed in the very competitive literary world. What does it take to get your work noticed and sold? She makes every moment count and will help you learn how to do the same.

The Self Improvement Show with Dr. Irene Conlan

Thursday at 12 Noon Pacific Time on VoiceAmerica Empowerment Channel

The Self Improvement Show was created because almost everyone wants to be better, do better, and achieve more, but we don’t always know how to do that. We aren’t looking for perfection. We are simply trying to improve in ways that allow us more happiness, contentment and success with some laughter along the way. We address issues common to us all and suggest useful tools that will help you tap into your strengths and your wonderful uniqueness. We think most self improvement is an “inside job” so we talk a lot about how to “go within” to make lasting changes. We talk to people who have struggled and won and have great stories to tell as well as those who live ordinary lives in extraordinary ways. The show is laid back, informative and down to earth. The welcome mat is always out and we invite you to join us.

Finding Tranquility in the Moments

Screen Shot 2017-03-06 at 6.26.34 PM

With the accelerated energies on the planet, many people are coming face-to-face with issues that they have either not dealt with or lessons that need to be experienced in one degree or another.  With all of this taking place, there is great opportunity for personal development like never before and at the same time, there is also a lot of energetic chaos that feels more like blindly walking through a dense fog, unable to distinguish any path leading out.

Staying centered allows us to move through these transition points with grace, while finding tranquility in the moments offers a greater sense of peace. Developing a consistent practice of mindfulness eventually makes these moments of internal bliss last for longer periods of time.  Ultimately we become more focused on the miracles that each moment brings as opposed to the perceived chaos that surrounds us.

When we take personal responsibility for the world that we choose to live in, we realize that we are the direct creator of what we are experiencing.  The inner journey for peace starts with me, only then can it be reflected in the world around us.

All You Need Is Love

LoveMP
February often has us thinking of Valentine’s Day and romance, but are we truly in love with the most important person in our life?

Think of someone you love unconditionally. How often is that same level of care, affection and devotion showered upon yourself? Typically, this answer falls far short of what we would consider loving behavior. With the ever alive self-critic and stream of negative input from the environment that surrounds us, it’s easy to fall into self disparaging comments and develop beliefs that don’t serve us. Discussions of self-love is often met with the criticism that its narcissistic, self-absorbed or egoistical to dedicate such devotion to yourself, however this couldn’t be further from the truth.

A self-loving practice teaches us to accept ourselves as we are. Love those qualities that make us celebrate and smile as our feet hit the floor every morning and the shadow characteristics, shrouded in pain that cause us to cringe and take shelter from the world. When we honestly love ourselves, the knowledge contained within our heart demands that we treated ourselves as the worthy, loveable, deserving, respected and forever cherished host.

Without loving ourselves first, we have nothing authentic and lasting to give someone else other than a momentary facade and fleeting vision of what we desire to become. Find the truth within your heart and love yourself beyond compare!

New Beginnings

As we start the new year, everything is about new beginnings. We often reflect on the upcoming year with anticipation, citing our intentions for the road ahead. How is it possible to show up in the world in a bigger way?
How can I make a greater impact in my community and lives of others? What are some of the ways that I can improve myself? These are some of the questions that come to mind as I look for new ways to move beyond the comfortable boundaries that my life continually encompasses me with.

“How can you know what you’re capable of if you don’t embrace the unknown?” – Esmeralda Santiago

What I’ve learned over the years, is when there is the willingness to be remain open to new ideas and opportunities, the magic of life tends to unfold in ways that we could have never predicted. I’ve discovered that by following my passion, being in gratitude and having faith in both myself and a Higher Source, miracles take place daily. My desire for you is that this New Year brings about all that your heart desires. Thank you for being a part of this great journey with me.

Open Heart

OpenHeartMP

One of the most difficult things to master is interpersonal relationships. We meet people from all walks of life that have experiences, challenges, wounds and wisdom that offers a different perspective from our own understanding. So often the stories that we create, our misperceptions and unclear communications can foster misunderstandings where none really exist. Recently I was reminded of this, and the lessons that I took away were priceless.

What I found was that when we are willing to open our hearts, it doesn’t just open us up to potential pain or heartache. For those that have the courage to look deeper, it gives us the opportunity for tremendous growth and freedom. This growth and freedom comes from being able to looking past our pains to the bigger picture for all involved.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle – Plato

When we authentically show up in the world as a living example of our values and morals (without expectations or intentions of others to show up the same), we are in a place of personal power that no one can shake. This allows us to see how others truly are and interact based not in judgement of their pains, but with compassion for them.

How often is it in our day that we gracefully and kindly express what it is that we want in life? Are we honest in how we show up in the world and how we treat others? Are we being true to ourselves and what it is that we stand for? Not sharing common values, doesn’t make the other person bad, it makes them human.

When we are willing not to take things personally and step back far enough to see the perspectives of others, the lesson we take away is that we are all learning, growing and evolving in our own unique way.

I’ve been working with my mentor Judy Goodman to gain a greater understanding on this discussion. To read Judy’s recent newsletter that expands on this topic visit: http://www.judygoodman.com/Newsletter.htm and you’ll understand why many people describe Judy’s insights as beyond conventional wisdom.

How Our Perception Changes Our World

8e9008ae-644b-44ca-89f2-529dc943372a

With so much going on in the world, how we choose to perceive things seems to be more important than ever.  While putting on rose-colored glasses isn’t something that I would suggest, choosing to change our perception of the challenges we face gives us the opportunity not only to shift how we show up in the world, but also allows us the opportunity to view the outer world and our inner world with more compassionate and grace.  This discussion often has me thinking about this quote from the Dalai Lama:

We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.

If we’re having a difficult time liking ourselves, how can we like those around us?  If we allow ourselves to fall into judgement or criticize those that are different, how can we love the uniqueness that we alone bring to the world?

The journey of developing and maintaining inner peace  traverses a road with no end, yet the journey itself offers new vistas, plateaus and valleys of who we really are. Thus granting us a deeper awareness and understanding that we truly are one, regardless of our outer world and differences.
Wishing you much peace, grace and love.
